My first paid gig!!!

 9" Cake: $50
Cupcakes: $20/dozen

So, I had to make 24 Hello Kitty cupcakes (seen in the previous post) along with the cake seen here on a Thursday night because the lady at my work was having her little girl's birthday party on Friday.  Well, I guess I really ended up making 2 cakes.  The first one I accidentally poked the center of with my pastry wheel.  If you have ever dealt with fondant, you know that this is not fixable. There are no patches or cover-ups or ANYTHING that you can do to fix a catastrophe like that.  So, I took off the fondant thinking I could just roll out some more fondant and be good. WRONG!!!!  When I did this, huge chunks of cake went with the fondant.  "Hey there giant holes, it's SO NICE to see you!"  I tried to fill the holes with as much icing as I could, but when I tried to cover it up with fondant, it immediately sank into these huge holes.  Time to make a new cake and start from scratch all over again. Yay! To make matters even better, this all rained down upon me at about 11:30 p.m.  Mind you, I have to get up at 6 a.m. so after this little incident, I got a little teary eyed.  I wanted to burst into tears, but I think I was just too tired for all that.  After hours and hours of back breaking labor, I finally finished everything at about 5 a.m.. I just ended up just staying awake instead of going to bed. So, here I am this morning, completely exhausted.  I was going to make some cupcakes tonight for a bridal shower on Saturday, but I think I'm just going to bed instead.  And I was really looking forward to doing those too.  But, to hell with all that now!!

Hello Kitty!

A lady at work asked me to make these for her daughter's 4th birthday (my first paid job).  These were the trial runs to see if I could do it.  I also wanted to show her what I was capable of doing so she wouldn't be worried about paying me for them. Great success!!

However, she also asked me to make her daughter a small Hello Kitty! cake so that she can put candles in it and cut it and all that hooplah.  I have never made a cake before and I was a little scared about how it would come out.  Here is my first attempt:

I was so surprised that it came out this good.  This was just the practice one, so I'm hoping it comes out just as good, if not better, when I do the real thing.

Doing this cake has given me the confidence to do even more of them.  While my first love will always be cupcakes, I'm starting to think that making cupcakes AND cakes will definitely be in my future.

STAY TUNED!!

April Fools' Day Cupcakes!!

Turkey drumstick, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes & gravy, and peas & carrots
I got the idea for these from Hello Cupcake!  I wanted to make these for a long time because they were so adorable, but I had to wait until April Fools' Day to do so.  They turned out so awesome and were a blast to make.

Sushi Cupcakes

Everything is edible except the plate and chopsticks
These were for my best friend Amy's birthday.  I saw the idea online, but I made mine a little different.  I was pretty happy with the results.  Thankfully, Amy was too.

Hamburger Cupcakes

Yummy!
I made these for my friend Tim's birthday.  I can't take credit for the idea as I saw it online somewhere. I thought it was a cute idea for a male birthday. These were soooo easy to make.

Smoking Halloween Cupcake Basket

Front of basket (notice the "smoke" coming out of the bottom)

Center of basket

Back of basket
This was such a fun project to make.  My friend Katie's birthday is right around Halloween so I decided to make her a Halloween basket for her birthday.  I made pumpkin, spider web, and mummy cupcakes, along with Halloween themed Peeps to stick in the basket. I also put some dry ice in the middle so that it would "smoke." It didn't quite turn out the way I wanted, but it still looked pretty cool.

The Beginning of My Cupcake Obsession

The cupcakes that started it all:
   NFL Cupcakes

A cupcake with a logo for every team in the NFL.  I made these for my boyfriend's fantasy football draft party. Never in my life had I ever done something like this before.  I just got the idea in my head and I was determined to do it.  The entire process took me about 2 weeks. From the research of different types of icing, to making the templates for each logo. The night I started to make these, it took me 8 hours to complete. The time just flew by.  I had so much fun making these and I was extremely happy with the results. Thus, the beginning of my cupcake obsession.
